Meme: Childhood Food Memories

carrying on the meme baton from Rantings From A Solitary Reverie

Can't really say if I have lots of fond food memories, was a pretty picky eater as a kid, still a bit picky now hahaha, but I do have a few places that I remembered we used to always go to so I'll just give you like the top 5.

The first food memory would be this place over at Geylang (sort of towards Kallang) where you would get this really great tasting chicken rice! If you planned on going there for dinner you had to make sure you went early (especially on the weekends) because by about 7.30 - 8 pm they would have sold out all of their chickens and they guys would normally make like 20 - 30 chickens! It was a family run store in a little hawker centre. The hawker centre is still there but not sure about the shop.

The second food memory would be probably have to be the restaurant at the old Holiday Inn along Scotts Road called The Baron's Table. The hotel is now called Royal Plaza on Scotts and The Baron's Table is no longer there. We used to always go there on special occasions like say my mom's birthday or visitors from out of town. I remember I always order the dover sole (deboned please - told you I was picky) and the waiters used to always like topping up your water glass. You could tell them not to or that you were fine but as soon as you looked the other way they'd sneak up on you and refill your glass - like it was a competition or something lol.

My third food memory would have to be prawn mee soup at the hawker centre over at Margaret Drive. When ever we went over to my maternal grandparents' place (who were Cantonese and Hokkien), we would nearly always stop off at that hawker centre for lunch. I think I only ever ordered 3 types of food from 3 different shops in that whole hawker centre lol, one would be yu cha kuay (I think's how you spell it), nonya and malay kueh such as kueh lapis (loved to peel off the different coloured layers and eat them one by one) and the prawn mee soup. I believe the hawker centre is still there but I wouldn't know about the shops. Don't go that way anymore especially seeing as my grandparents have passed on already.

My fourth food memory will have to be my mom's cooking especially at Christmas! We would always invite our family (my mom's side only) and friends over to our house for a dinner party and my mom would cook up a good spread. I mean the dinning table (which could fit like 8) would be completely covered with food served buffet style. There would be a huge turkey, plenty of stuffing, gravy (not cranberry sauce - English have turkey with gravy, Americans have it with cranberry sauce), different types of potatoes (roasted, mashed, sauteed), carrots, peas, etc. We would have so much food that we would usually have some leftovers.

My fifth food memory would have to be chicken or turkey a la king - usually had turkey a la king after our christmas party lol. This is how we normally use leftover turkey and roast chicken.

Man, now I'm really hungry!!! Thank goodness it's only another 20 mins till lunch time!

Contact Lens Found

Well I went home after a long day of work yesterday and searched the bathroom for my missing lens. I checked the sink, the shelf where I leave my lens container, even the bathroom floor below the sink...no joy. So cheezed off. Turned round and looked over to the shower area just in case and there starting at me was my dried up lens!!! It was actually pretty easy to spot given that even though it's just a regular lens it has a slight blue tint to it and the blue tint stood out against the pale peach bathroom tile hahaha. Had to be careful not to break the lens because it was all dried up so I soaked it for a while to soften it and then gave it a good cleaning and then let it soak over night and it was A-Ok this morning - it's in my eye at the moment hahahaha.

Well another long day of work has come to an end and if I don't end this entry now I'll be here even longer so I'm outties!!

Seem to be losing things

Ok so last week I lost my voice - just call me Princess Froggie - and now I've lost a contact lens! Went to put my lens on this morning (yup had to put in my 'eyes'), and when I opened my lens container I realised that I only had one lens! Haven't got a clue where the other one is. Tried looking for it but no luck. Thought I had another pair somewhere (I wear disposals) but couldn't find it - I think I'm wearing my last pair lol - so it's glasses for the rest of the week till I can get to the optometrist this weekend.

Still waiting for my voice to return. I'm not fully 100% but I'm a lot better compared to the first day - let's just say I still have my 'phone sex' voice lol.

Missing Voice

Went to see the doc about my sore throat yesterday, mainly cos it was causing me to have a cough and I hate having coughs because if I don't get rid of them quickly they seem to last forever. Got some meds from him and some good cough mixture which has helped considerably.

Woke up this morning to discover that I'd lost my voice. I kind of knew that would happen given my throat but I was hoping it wouldn't. I think I might have to post an APB for my voice lol. My boss smsed me this morning to tell me he was coming in after 10 am and I replied to let him know that I had no voice. He said to go and see the doc and then go home but I told him no need cos the doc had already given me meds the day before for my throat. I mean there's nothing really wrong with me except that I have no voice lol. Right now I can either whisper or croak - just call me Princess Froggie hahahaha.

My boss is currently at the docs anyway, hence the reason why I'm able to blog and I've cleared all my work for the time being. Thankfully the phone has not wrong, so I haven't had to croak. Shall try to speak as little as possible today and hopefully my voice will be back tomorrow or at least better.

My 4 day weekend

Took Monday and Tuesday off to clear some leave and to enjoy my birthday - woohoo!

My friend, Lis, invited out for lunch at the last minute on Saturday. Didn't mind though cos I really had nothing to do and was just going to relax at home, and seeing as the person was going to be treating me to lunch, why pass up on a free lunch lol. Went over to this little coffee shop called "The Book Club" over at Robertson Quay/Mohd Sultan. Never been there before but it was kind of nice. After lunch we walked over to Clarke Quay but then decided to head over to another little coffee shop over at Prinsep Street (near the old Cathay cinema). It took us I would say about 30 mins to get there on foot but we were both stuffed from lunch so it helped. We went there for cake and coffee. Another nice little cafe. It's amazing how time flies cos by the time we were done it was almost 5 pm and we had met up at 1 pm. After finishing our desserts we decided to head home, especially given that Lis' eyes were giving her some trouble - she thinks she may have gotten some of her hair mask in her eyes and just hadn't been able to flush it out properly. Started to have a sore throat later that night - wonder if it was because of the food I ate?

Sunday was a slightly typical Sunday for me even though it was my birthday. Yes, I have aged another year though for some unknown reason people don't believe I'm the age that I am, they always seem to think I'm like 5 years younger than I actually am. Guess that's a good thing lol. Went to church in the morning with my dad. Got my presents from him and Adam. My dad gave me an small ang pow and Adam got me a silver necklace with a dolphin on it. He knows how much I like dolphins (as does he) so he always gets me something with a dolphin on it. After church I could feel like I had a slight fever so decided to grab some lunch and then rest. When I got home my mom was up and she wished me happy birthday. I got a small ang pow from her too. Told her I wasn't feeling well so I was going to take a nap. She got a bit worried when I told her I had a fever because there are a lot of cases of dengue fever going round. I told her not to worry cos I knew I was having the fever because of my sore throat. Had my lunch, took some meds and then watched tv for a while before I fell asleep. Was hoping to have a few hours of rest but my mom kept on checking on me. Eventually gave up at about 5 pm but I did feel a bit better. My mom offered to cook some macaroni soup for me but I had to go down to get the ingredients lol. So much for being sick. Had a bowl of that and decided to go to bed early. Lucky for me my fever finally broke that night before I went to sleep so I woke up the next day feeling 10 times better.

Monday - lazed about in bed for a while then had some of the left over macaroni soup for lunch before heading over to my sister's place. Lynn's on leave because Adam was taking his PSLE exams (which determine whether he can take his O levels or go into ITE). Monday was his last paper so he was home by the time I got there. Chatted with my dad for a bit, played games with Adam for a while and helped Lynn with her curtain making. Also got a present from her, she gotten me what I asked for - a mini food processor. Wanted it cos my dad had told me that if you put in tuna and mayo in it, the food processor will mix it all up really good and also one can of tuna will come out with a whole load more cos the food processor will really mince it up. Haven't tried it out yet but might just do that this weekend. Maybe I'll try and make chicken mayo too. Watched "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" with Adam in the afternoon. After that I went on home, just to drop off my food processor cos I was meeting up with Beatrice for dinner. We went over to Sun Plaza in Sembawang for dinner and after that went for a walk over at our usual "destressing" ground. We stopped off at Nelson's Bar near where we walk for a couple of drinks, a few games of pool and a few hands of cards. We know the owner of the bar and well she doesn't mind if we stay there for a while but like only order a drink each. We like going there cos it's very relaxed and they don't mind what we wear, after all we were both in shorts and tees and flip flops lol. We left there just a little after 10 pm and took a nice long strong back to the MRT to head home.

Tuesday - spent the whole morning at the polyclinic with my mom. She was supposed to go for a check up on Friday but as usual didn't bother and seeing as I was on leave I thought I better make her go plus she needed to get her meds refilled. It was lunch time by the time we got back from there, and I spent the rest of the day watching vids I had borrowed from Lynn. I saw "THe Fantastic Four", "The Longest Yard" - that was hilarious!!! - "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Hitch" - another funny one. Went to bed early because it was back to the grind the next day.

All in all, apart from being sick, I think I had a pretty relaxing 4 day weekend.

TGOT remembered!

Got a message from TGOT last night. We were messaging about ways to beat jet lag. He was telling me about one of his friends who would go so far as to put torchlights on the back of his knees...apparently it works but I don't see how and wouldn't want to look like a dork on such a long flight hahaha it's not like you could hide your face or anything. LOL

He also mentioned that he got me a postcard to add to my collection...so sweet, I didn't even ask for it but he remembered! Sweet right? He's been really busy with work, as have I so have yet to meet up to get it from him, probably next week.

Note to BuzzBuzz - possible to get some postcards from Texas/Dallas? Just started collecting them last year but keep forgetting to ask you for some lol. On leave for a couple of days next week and want to make this plastic display pocket thing so that I can put my postcards on display, will probably hang it on the back of my bedroom door. Will take a pic of it when it's done.

Oh it's TGOT's birthday on Monday, yup his is the day after mine and that's also the same day as Robert (remember him?). Turns out another one of my friends at the office is celebrating his birthday on the 8th hahaha talk about spooky.

Well it's 9.50 pm and I'm still in the office but I'll be leaving soon. Stayed back to clear some filing and tidy up my desk seeing as I'll be off for the next 4 days. Got a dinner treat from Viv's boss. He treated my Julie and I to dinner, actually more like we conned him into it lol. He treated her cos she'd covered for Viv who's on leave the last 3 days and stayed back for overtime today (yup she's still here). My treat was because it was my birthday on Sunday.

Ok got a cab and I'm heading on home now. Vent after my leave!

Been to busy to blog

First off, apologies for the lack of update but I've been so busy with work that I just haven't had the time to blog. Right now it's 7 pm on a Thursday evening and I'm still stuck in the office but just doing some letter folding so I thought I'd try and do a quickie update before heading home.

I'm just going to let you in on the few exciting things that have happened, for the rest of the time it would have been spent doing work or just going home to recover from the long day of work hahaha.

My friend, Vivien, roped me into joining this contest organised by SMRT (the subway company here) together with her and her hubby. Basically, the gist of the competition was that 3-member teams would be given 8 clues to different locations (either train stations or bus interchanges) and upon arriving at these locations you had to complete a task in order to get a stamp in your race passport. Once you had all 8 stamps you head back to the finish line. There's a twist though, given that the theme of the race is safety and courtesy on the trains, buses and taxis owned by SMRT, if you commit certain violations (such as not holding on to the handrail while riding the escalator) you get a time penalty so even if you were the first time to return you may not be the overall winner if you have time penalties. Basically it's like a combination of Eco Challenge and The Amazing Race.

The race was fixed for October 2 2005 but we had to go for a pre-race brief on Sept 17 2005 over at SMRT Headquarters at City Hall. After the briefing (which was from 11 am till about 1 pm), the three of us (Vivien, her hubby Lee and I) went over to Funan.

To BuzzBuzz - I bumped into your bro not once but twice there lol. He had just gone to Indochine (where Judy works) to take down his art work or something like that.

After lunch, we headed over to Bugis cos Vivien wanted to get some zippers and fabric and they're pretty cheap over there.

It seems everyone is roping me into doing things. Got "conned" into doing a photo shoot for some brochure for a new skills scheme for Workforce Development Agency (WDA). You see the woman who parks her car next to my boss' in our office building's car park works for WDA and she's in charge of this new skills scheme and well they needed a pan asian person as one of their models for their brochure and well she thought of me - aak! me a model??!!! Given that it was going to be done during office hours I made her get clearance from my boss in the hopes that he would say "no" but instead he said "no problem" so I ended up having to go for it but hey at least I got out of the office for a few hours. And before you ask, nope I didn't get paid for it but I did get a free lunch and Qistin (the woman from WDA) drove me to the studio and back =)

My mom's birthday. Didn't do much though cos I had spent the day before with her. Ended up having to go into the office after church to do some photocopying. Ended up being there from 2 pm till 9.30 pm!!!

Race day. We had to register our team between 7.45 am - 8.30 am luckily the race started and finished next to Woodlands MRT which is one station away from my home. There were 3 categories racing, Student, Open Blue and Open Red. Each cateogry had it's own set of prizes. We were in Open Blue and there were a total of 54 teams in that category. First prize was S$1,200 cash plus gifts, second prize was S$900 cash plus gifts and third prize was S$600 cash plus gifts.

The race started at about 9.15 am and we headed off to solve our 8 clues which to tell you the truth were pretty easy. I do another blog entry later on the play by play of the race. All in all we had fun and we didn't exactly leave empty handed. We were all given free tees to wear during the race (had to otherwise you couldn't get on the trains and buses for free hahaha), and some goodies bags at the end which had quite a few things in it. We got to the finish line at about 2 pm which means we took about 3 hrs 45 mins but had to wait till about 4 pm for the results so we headed off to Causeway Point (the mini mall right next door) for some lunch. We had checked in as team 36. Personally I think 36 out of 54 teams is not bad at all and later we found out that the top 3 teams had finished the race in like 3 hrs and 32 mins so we weren't that far off.

After the race I headed on home to recover!

Monday, 3 Oct 2005

HRB was in a pretty grouchy mood today. Got a bit cheesed off with me cos I hadn't filed a letter!!! Sorry but I've been a little busy but HRB doesn't seem to think so. Even passed a comment that I was always on the phone - don't see how that's possible when I spend most of the day in the Torture Chamber!!! Even my friend who sits next to me thought that was a weird and wrong comment to make.

TGOT Update

TGOT has been away in Seattle for a work conference. He left on Sept 27 and got back just yesterday. He was nice enough to message me the night before he left and messaged when he got back yesterday but I haven't heard much from him, probably busy with work or recovering from jet lag hahaha.

OK enough for now...it's now 7.30 pm and I want to go home already!!!
